Review of the Minecraft Movie

The video game Minecraft has been a very popular game since its release in 2009, with its Sandbox-style gameplay where you can make anything you dream of. In the trend of moviemaking, there has been a steady rise in video game adaptations, starting with Sonic the Hedgehog back in 2020 and Minecraft is no exception. A Minecraft Movie came out in April and is about a group of misfits (Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen) falling into the world of Minecraft, where they then have to save the Minecraft world with the help of Steve (Jack Black).

Overall, this movie was okay. The script felt predictable at times and some scenes in the movie were cringy. There were some pretty good cameos from popular Minecraft YouTubers such as Mumbo Jumbo, DanTDM, and the late Technoblade, however. If you don't take this movie seriously, it can be pretty entertaining. What really surprised me while watching this movie was the atmosphere of the theater, as when I went the atmosphere was absolutely electric. People were quoting lines from the trailers and cheering when the memes that formed from those trailers appeared in the movie. I had even seen videos of people in theaters going wild and throwing popcorn, and even a live chicken at the “Chicken Jockey!” scene. In total, this movie shouldn’t be taken seriously, but if you want to go to a movie at a theater just to have a good time with your friends, this might be the right movie for you.
